Welcome to TheGreenGame.org. This site is intended make a game of working on the issue of global warming. Not a game as in taking this most serious problem lightly, but a game to see who can come up with the best ideas for solutions and then to challenge the rest of us to come up with even better ideas. Please contact us with your ideas about how you, your businesses, others in your life, etc are doing at playing TheGreenGame. Visit often.              play@TheGreenGame.org

Tip of the week:

Some food tips:

Take your own cloth bags shopping with you.

When only buying one or 2 items think about telling the salesperson you don’t need a bag.

Try to eat as much locally grown food as possible (less transport costs, better for you too).

Don’t buy more food than you need & use what you buy (you can start getting really creative as the fridge empties)

Meat takes a lot of energy to raise. Fish, not so much. Fruits & veggies, even less.

I’m outta here before I get accused of turning everyone vegetarian.

Here are some ideas for the home and your personal life:

Some electrifying savings:
Try to make good use of power strips, such as plugging your computer peripherals (monitor, modem, router, speakers, external drives, etc) into a power strip so that when you turn off your computer you can also turn off all your peripherals with one power switch.
Unplug your cell phone charger & other chargers from the wall when not being used.
If you are buying any new appliances, try to find out if they are available in an Energy Star model. Here is a link to Energy Start products, which includes way more than just appliances (there are over 500 TVs): http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=find_a_product.

Some water tips:
If you live in a house, turn off all the water & check to see if the water meter is moving or still. If it is moving, you’ve got a leak somewhere. This could get expensive!
Put a plastic water bottle full of water (capped) inside your toilet tanks. Cause less water to be used during flushes & is better than putting in a brick.
Car washes recycle water & so use less than if you do it yourself at home, but if you do it at home, maybe think about pulling the car onto the lawn (if you have one) just for the time you’re washing it so the runoff waters the grass.
FOR FREE: You can get showerheads and other low flow fixtures from the Maui County Board of Water Supply (270-7199), or the Public Works Department (270-7417). They’ll give you a kit that covers every sink & shower. This saves a lot of water over time as the water flow is aerated.

Use compact Fluorescent Light bulbs instead of incandescent.
Wash laundry in cold water whenever possible, and save up to do a full load.
Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure, drive a bit slower, & with a gentle foot.
Use the backs of envelopes your mail comes in for scratch paper.
Buy 'minimally' packaged goods.
Fill your dishwasher before running a load.
(help us expand these lists, please)

Things that are a little bit bigger:
Ask vendors you purchase goods & services from what they are doing to be responsible planetary stewards.
(and be sure you like their answers or ask them to do better)
Consider a solar hot water heater or complete photovoltaic array of solar panels for your roof.
(which would allow you to sell back or return electric power into the grid if you didn't use it all)
Purchase a hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle.
Eat more vegetables (producing meat consumes lots of energy), and try to grow your own
(or buy 'locally grown' if possible - cutting down on food transportation costs makes a big difference)
